Synthetic Biology

Synthetic biology, one area of new technological development, integrates engineering, genetics and computer science to produce new forms of life.  This is going beyond the genetic modification of existing species to the manufacture of new ones.  Synthetic biology could be used to produce medications, replace human organs of make biological weapons and products that destroy biological diversity.   In August 2014 Quakers in Canada approved the following:

Affirm principles for the oversight of synthetic biolgy including:  employ the precautionary principle; require mandatory regulations; protect public health and worker safety; protect the environment; guarantee the right-to-know and democratic participation; require corporate accountability and manufacturer liability.

The Canadian Yearly Meeting (Quakers) will continue to work with the Biotechnology Reference Group of the Canadian Council of Churches to get our Government to take action.
